What is geophysics about?
Geophysiks ist partly earth sciences and partly physics. Its goal is to investigate and understand the physical properties and processes of the earth's crust, mantle and core (physics of the solid earth).
On the one hand geophysics explores natural processes like earthquakes, tides or magnetic storms, on the other hand it is used to explore reservoirs (e.g. oil and gas).
Geophysics is becomming more and more important in the development of environmentally and climate friendly technologies (e.g. geothermal energy).
Geophysics can be divided into three main groups of research:
- Wavetheory (seismics and seismology)
- Geoelektric and elektromagnetic methods (magnetotellurics )
- Potential methods (gravimetry, geomagnetics )
1. Lankwitzer Geo-Campus soccer tournament
On 24.06.2009 the "Phasers Lankwitz" ( geophysics ) won the 1. Lankwitzer Geo-Campus soccer tournament.
In the preliminaries the way the semi-finals was ensured by two 3:1 wins.
The semi-final opponent was the mineralogy/geochemistry team. This last hurdle was cleared in a 2:0 win.
The exciting final against the geography team ended 2:1 for the Phasers.
We thank the "Geology Rockstars" for the successful organization of tournament.
'Thank you very much' to all the teams for the pleasant change to the academic routine.
See you next year.
